The Indian Ocean Rim Association, in collaboration with the Kingdom of Thailand and with support from the French Development Agency (AFD), organized a 3-day workshop on Marine Debris in March 2025 in Bangkok. Gathering scientists, experts, and delegates from Member States, the event aimed to promote scientific research, innovation, and investment opportunities for sustainable management of marine debris in the Indian Ocean. By bridging policy makers and scientists, this workshop raised awareness on the unique distribution patterns of marine debris in the region, their impacts on ecosystem services and the importance of effective monitoring systems. It also showcased innovative solutions to reduce marine litter and explored financial strategies to scale up sustainable initiatives. Some Member States shared their national action plans to address this growing challenge. A site visit was organized in the Chao Phraya river to witness an effective solution implemented by The Ocean Cleanup to intercept debris before it reaches the ocean. Women leaded 63% of the presentations, reflecting their increasing leadership in ocean science.
