2nd Workshop to develop IORA Guideline to combat IUU Fishing in Indian Ocean

Held in Saint Dennis, La Reunion from 2-4 May 2024, the Workshop was organized by the Ministries of Foreign Europe and Foreign Affairs of France and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia. It is the follow-up of the First Workshop held in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 12-14 September 2023. The meeting was attended by 10 Member States, 1 Dialogue partners, France Development Agency (AFD) and Indian Ocean Commission (IOC). 

 

The IORA Guideline, initiated by France and Indonesia, aims to enhance cooperation among IORA Member States in combating IUU Fishing and promoting sustainable marine fisheries management. 

 

This Second Workshop aimed to gather the inputs from IORA Member States to develop a comprehensive guideline addressing Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) Fishing. The participants discussed the first draft of the Guideline developed by the experts from Indonesia and France. The participants also had the opportunity to visit the Secretariat of Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA), the OSIRIS 2 vessel of France’s Maritim Affairs to fight against IUU Fishing, and the Port where IUU Fishing vessels have been confiscated and docked.
