The Indian Ocean Rim Academic Group (IORAG) convened its first virtual advisory meeting for the Early Career Professionals (ECP) Network, a platform designed to engage young professionals in regional research, policy dialogue, and capacity-building initiatives across the Indian Ocean Rim on 26 March 2025.
The meeting formally introduced the ECP Network Steering Committee and highlighted its guiding principles of inclusivity, collaboration, innovation, youth empowerment, and capacity building. Participants were presented with the Network’s annual plan of activities, outlining strategies for professional development, regional engagement, and sustained visibility of IORA’s research and academic initiatives.
The meeting was co-chaired by the Chairperson of the ECP Network Steering Committee, Mrs Padmini Gaya Gookool, and the IORAG Facilitator, Ms Nicole Du Plessis. Attendees included IORAG Member State Focal Points and representatives from Dialogue Partner countries, fostering a collaborative environment for strategic discussion and guidance.
Key outcomes of the meeting included the finalization of the ECP Network’s annual plan, the establishment of a structured framework for engagement, and clear pathways to support professional development, capacity building, and cross-border collaboration among early career researchers.
This inaugural advisory meeting reinforced IORA’s commitment to empowering the next generation of researchers and professionals, strengthening regional academic networks, and enhancing cooperation across the Indian Ocean Rim. By providing young professionals with opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and skill development, the ECP Network aims to advance IORA’s broader objectives of regional research excellence, capacity building, and sustainable development.
