The International Workshop on the “Role of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals - 2030” was held virtually on 24-25 May 2022, jointly organized by the Centre for Science and Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAM S&T Centre), New Delhi, and the IORA Secretariat, Mauritius, under the framework of their 2019 Memorandum of Understanding. The Workshop aimed to explore the role of STI in accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in Emerging Economies (EE), Least Developed Countries (LDCs), and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The Workshop brought together 139 participants, including scientists, researchers, technologists, policymakers, and practitioners from NAM and IORA Member Countries. It provided a platform for academia-industry engagement, public-private partnerships, and knowledge exchange on the application of STI for sustainable development.
The Workshop comprised four technical sessions covering:
- Strategies and means for SDG Implementation - Presentations included South Africa’s SDG mapping to its National Development Plan and Mauritius’ smart tourism initiatives integrating technology for sustainability.
- Knowledge Access for Developing Economies- Speakers highlighted blue and green innovation, STI in higher education, coastal water management in Ghana, healthcare technology in Kenya, and the need for cross-border R&D collaboration.
- Capacity Building and Social Innovation- Sessions focused on global STI pilot projects, sustainable coastal management in Russia, rural women’s empowerment in India, sustainable urban development in Nepal, and coastal pollution management in Somalia.
- Barriers to Technology Transfer- Presentations addressed policy-science gaps in Madagascar, challenges in technology transfer for climate action in Indonesia, sustainable construction in Sri Lanka, and innovations in blue biotechnology in Russia.
The Workshop concluded with a working session, where participants adopted an Outcome Document containing a set of STI recommendations to guide NAM S&T Centre and IORA Member Countries in advancing SDGs by 2030.
