IORA Oil Spill Response Workshop held in Australia
26 April - 30 April 2015   |   Events

The IORA Oil Spill Response Workshop, held from 26 to 30 April 2015 in Perth, Australia, was a pivotal event aimed at addressing a critical environmental and economic vulnerability in the region. Organized by the Government of Australia, the workshop convened technical experts, environmental managers, and disaster response officials from IORA Member States. Its core purpose was to systematically assess and bolster the collective readiness to manage major oil spill incidents in the Indian Ocean.

The workshop centered on two main objectives: identifying gaps in oil spill response capability and capacity across the region, and determining the levels of scientific knowledge and research required to protect marine habitats and living resources during response operations.

The primary outcome was a detailed Workshop Report that documented the findings, including a regional gap analysis and a set of recommendations for enhancing cooperation. This event significantly advanced IORA's MSS agenda by focusing on environmental security and disaster preparedness. It laid the groundwork for future collaborative mechanisms and capacity-building programs, ensuring member states are better equipped to prevent and respond to marine pollution incidents, thereby safeguarding the ecological health and economic prosperity of the Indian Ocean.
