A series of pivotal IORA Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX) Workshops were held in two key regions of the Indian Ocean in 2022. The workshop for the Western Indian Ocean Region took place in Seychelles from 29 August to 1 September, and for the Eastern Indian Ocean Region in Bangladesh from 5 to 8 September. These events were organized by the Government of Australia to enhance regional capability in lifesaving operations.
The workshops brought together search and rescue (SAR) coordinators and maritime professionals from IORA Member States. Core activities included detailed presentations by each member on their SAR regions, capabilities, and capacities, followed by informative site visits to host nations' SAR facilities. Participants engaged in highly practical, scenario-based exercises involving thought-provoking case studies, requiring them to collaboratively devise solutions for complex rescue operations.
The main outcome was a comprehensive Workshop Report for each region. Furthermore, participants were invited to undertake an online SAR Calculator training in December 2022 as an extension of the workshop. These events significantly boosted practical cooperation and shared operational understanding, directly strengthening the region's collective ability to respond effectively to maritime emergencies and save lives at sea, a core component of IORA's MSS mandate.
