IORA Workshop on Tsunami Early Warning Systems
26 September - 28 September 2019   |   Events

The IORA Workshop on Tsunami Early Warning Systems: Lessons Learnt from the 2018 Tsunamis in Indonesia was held from 26 to 28 September 2019 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Organized by the Government of Indonesia, this symposium addressed a critical gap in regional preparedness for low-probability, high-impact events.

The workshop aimed to foster a critical and scientific dialogue on tsunami science and the future direction of Tsunami Early Warning (TEW) and Mitigation Systems. It specifically focused on improving the effectiveness of warning chains for events with very short lead times, such as those caused by near-field earthquakes. Discussions also emphasized enhancing public understanding and multi-stakeholder coordination to boost overall tsunami preparedness and mitigation.

The outcome was a Workshop Report. By analyzing recent events in Indonesia, the workshop provided invaluable, real-world lessons for the entire IORA region. It directly contributed to strengthening the technical and operational foundations of regional early warning capabilities, a core component of IORA's DRM strategy to save lives and reduce economic losses from tsunamis.
