Three Virtual Courses on Maritime Security and International Law by Australia
27 May - 21 June 2024   |   Events

Three specialized virtual courses on maritime security and international law was delivered in May and June 2024 by the Government of Australia. These courses provided focused, accessible capacity-building for IORA Member States on critical contemporary issues.

The courses included: (1) Maritime Security in the Indian Ocean Region (27-31 May), offering a strategic overview of regional security dynamics; (2) Protection of Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) (4-5, 11-12 June), addressing the new international agreement on marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction; and (3) Maritime Regulation and Enforcement (17-21 June), revisiting core legal and operational principles.

Delivered online, these courses allowed officials, legal experts, and policymakers from across the region to deepen their knowledge on specialized topics without the need for travel. While no formal report is listed, the primary outcome was the direct enhancement of human capital and specialized expertise within member states. This initiative strengthened the region's collective understanding of evolving legal frameworks and security challenges, empowering participants to contribute more effectively to national and regional policy and enforcement efforts.
