Considering past disasters experienced in the IORA Region, it is necessary to raise awareness and capacity among national and local level authorities with the experiences of most affected countries.
Transboundary effects of disasters urge countries to work together, in a collaborative way, and learn from each other facing similar calamities. Natural hazard assessment and disaster management is amongst the primary shared topic that has to be further communicated and developed among IORA Member States and Dialogue Partners. Exchanging experiences and lessons both from pre-disaster risk reduction activities and post disaster relief and recovery practices will benefit both country and regional level.
In this respect, Türkiye proposes a webinar aimed at developing capacity of national and local level practitioners on integrated earthquake risk reduction at the IORA Region. Considering the high seismicity in the IORA Region and seismic observation capacity of Member States, exchange of experiences on Türkiye’s capacity on the use of emerging technologies in earthquake monitoring could add value to the existing initiatives of IORA Member States on their endeavors on earthquake risk management.
This webinar would revolve around the lessons learnt from earthquake and triggered secondary hazards from Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes, one of the biggest earthquake doublets in the world that Türkiye experienced on 06 February 2023, which caused more than 50,000 deaths and more than 130,000 casualties.
It would be held by the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of Türkiye (AFAD), established in 2009, which is the National Authority responsible for all the phases of disaster management practices in the Republic of Türkiye.
