The Western Indian Ocean Regional Conference on Rescue and Assistance at Sea was convened on 24-25 June 2025 in Port Louis, Mauritius. Organized by the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) and the Foundation for Humanitarian Action at Sea (FHAS), the conference focused on enhancing lifesaving capabilities in the Western Indian Ocean.
The conference aimed to enhance national capacities, deepen regional coordination, and expand collaboration with other regional players on Search and Rescue (SAR). Topics included improving coordination between maritime rescue coordination centres (MRCCs), legal frameworks for assisting persons in distress at sea, and the role of merchant shipping.
IORA's participation underscored the complementary roles of different regional organizations. It allowed IORA to align its regional SAR initiatives with ongoing efforts in the Western Indian Ocean, promoting a unified and efficient approach across the entire IOR. This engagement is vital for avoiding fragmentation and ensuring that all seafarers in the Indian Ocean benefit from robust, coordinated SAR coverage.
