The Workshop on Cooperation for Maritime Safety was conducted virtually from 24 to 28 July 2023. Co-organized by Sri Lanka and the Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law, this event delved into the second pillar of the MSS Working Group's mandate: maritime safety.

The workshop provided an in-depth exploration of the rights and obligations of IORA Member States under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) concerning maritime safety. It further examined the key international safety instruments adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which sets the global standards for safe ship construction, operation, and pollution prevention.

Participants, including maritime administrators and legal officers, gained a clearer understanding of the international regulatory framework. The outcome document was a workshop report.
