Our internship and scholarship programs are designed to empower talented individuals, fostering a new generation of leaders passionate about regional cooperation and sustainable progress.

Our scholars are a central part of our ‘supporting young people to reach their potential’ work stream, which seeks to identify exceptional young men and women excelling in their respective fields of study, and to support them in their chosen career paths.
Our programme awards full tuition fee scholarships, covering tuition fees and a wider package of support for each successful candidate. All scholars are offered paid work experience in a charity, access to a mentor and leadership development training.

The IORA–Nelson Mandela Be the Legacy Internship Programme was officially launched at the 18th Council of Ministers (COM) Meeting on 2 November 2018, in Durban, South Africa. The year 2018 marked the centenary of Nelson Mandela’s birth—an occasion that offered the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) a meaningful opportunity to honour its enduring connection with this global icon by advancing one of his core aspirations: to change the world for the better.
This commitment was further underscored through the adoption of the Special Declaration on the Commemoration of the Centenary of the Birth of Nelson Mandela and the eThekwini Communiqué by Ministers and Heads of Delegation of IORA Member States during the COM Meeting.
